Elizabethan Films
flora Robson played Elizabeth during the time of the Spanish armada the movie was directed by William k Howard in 1937 the makeup in this photo you can see slight contouring just below the cheek bones and in the corners of the forehead which gives her face a sense of elegance but also gives her a stern look.
Queen Elizabeth was played by Bette Davis in 1939 in the movie "The private lives of Elizabeth and Essex" directed Michael Curtiz. Perc Westmore creates the make up for this movie the pale white face and also the subtle red lips creating the bags under her eyes suggest she played a more mature aged Elizabeth. Perc Westmore tried to create realistic makeup that would resemble queen Elizabeth
Queen Elizabeth was played by Glenda jackson in a 6 part series on bbc in 1971 the series showed elizabeth over the years sandra shepard applied this makeup look for seasons 1-5 you can see in the first season her face is not pale white but has a slight bronze look to it
But as the season go on and she is portrayed to be aging her face becomes more pale and her lips and cheeks more red
In the last season Dawn Alcock does the make up you can see her skin looks very pale but also immensely damaged which in Elizabethan times would have been the case because of the make up they would use to make there face so pale. white lead would damage the skin which is shown in this makeup this was done by applying a prosthetic mask and the makeup on top of the mask.
